Sling Media Slingbox Consumer Electronics - Review - PCMag UK
Sling Media re-enters the UK market with the Slingbox M1, a TV streamer with a difference. But company continues to sell Slingbox products, support the Slingbox community. It's starting to feel quite dated, but this is a good option for frequent KELSEY Media Ltd, Cudham Tithe Barn, Berry's Hill, Cudham, Kent TN16 3AG, England.
It's made entirely of matte black plastic with a textured finish that feels durable and scratch resistant. As a coworker commented, it's no longer flat on top, so people won't be putting stuff on top and watching their Slingboxes overheat, which used to happen with the older models.
In the package, you get lots of goodies. Aside from the Slingbox itself, there's a small remote control, an AC adapter, an HDMI cable, component and composite video cables, a pair of stereo RCA audio cables, an Ethernet cable, and a printed instruction manual.
To get around this problem, Sling Media recommends a simultaneous HDMI and component audio and video cable setup; I ended up testing with the component connection. The Slingbox also includes an internal IR blaster for controlling your cable-company-issued set-top box. This means you don't have to fiddle with the little plastic external one on a wire, as you did with older models.
Sling Media says the blaster is strong enough to bounce off the walls and hit the sensor on the set-top box.

If that doesn't work in your setup, the company still includes the old IR blaster on a wire in case you need it. The Slingbox took about two minutes to boot for the first time; it installed a software update during this time, which I assume was already on the Slingbox, because I hadn't yet connected it to a network.
You can connect to After inputting my location and zip code, the unit scanned the connected inputs and asked about our service provider, for which I selected Dish New York. It already had the Dish Hopper in its set-top box database and loaded the appropriate remote control layout.
I tested the programmed remote buttons as directed, and everything worked properly from the Slingbox remote.

I had no problem bringing up the menu and channel guide, switching channels, and powering the Hopper off or on—and that was without using the external blaster cable, and while standing in front of both devices. The bundled Slingbox remote is fairly small.
It's made entirely of black plastic and is very light, but doesn't feel too flimsy. The rubber buttons are easy to press, although they're not backlit. Performance As with any streaming p device, you'll want to make sure your home network is in tip top shape.
As a general rule, Slingboxes have always excelled at optimizing the quality of video against available network bandwidth. Even over Wi-Fi, the Slingbox is no exception. I also had little trouble changing channels and otherwise navigating the Dish Hopper's program guide. That said, the whole process still feels a lot like it did with the first Slingbox in Sling Media has sped up channel changes over the years, but they're still sluggish and typically take several seconds.
Sometimes you have to wait several more seconds before you even begin to see a video stream. A few times, the separate Guide window in my Chrome browser lost its ability to change channels directly, meaning that I had to go back to the Dish Hopper's Guide and enter in channel numbers manually with the on-screen remote.
You don't have to leave the TV on at home for the Slingbox to work, although only one viewer can connect to the device at any given time. You can set up view-only access for a guest if necessary. But the Slingbox still ties up the TV it's attached to; you can't turn on that TV and watch a different cable channel than the one someone is watching remotely from the Slingbox. This is a dual-band The Slingbox also includes its own easy-to-use remote. The picture quality on the Slingbox is phenomenal and like theviewable in gorgeous p.
In my own tests, the Slingbox looked significantly better when streaming live content than Cablevision's excellent Optimum Online app for the iPad.
The Slingbox has a few other tricks up its sleeve too. The first is something called SlingProjector. Photos worked great in my test and in a demo I saw at Sling's offices, the video transfer went off without a hitch. I asked Sling about the possibility of bringing music to Sling Projector and was told it was on the roadmap. Sling also has a product in the works called SlingSync. SlingSync allows you to connect an external hard drive to your Slingbox and easily back up your data over the network.
When you're on the Slingbox's network, you can tell SlingSync to automatically back up all the photos and videos off of your phone.
How Do the New Slingbox's Stack Up in the Living Room? [REVIEW]
This isn't dissimilar to options like iCloud's Photo Stream and Dropbox's automatic upload service, but for users who don't want to pay for a cloud service or want a way to have a local way to easily and wirelessly back up content, it's terrific. Even better — you can access that local media using the SlingPlayer interface while on another device.
More Services Added to the Box? Looking at the new Sling devices — especially the Slingbox — I was struck by how close the system was to being the holy grail for consuming place-shifted content. The only problem is that we don't all watch our content solely from the cable box any more.

With the way that the Slingbox can act as a pass-through, with one interface and one remote for the device and the cable box — it got me thinking — wouldn't it be great if I could get HBO Go on my Slingbox? Sling wouldn't confirm that it's planning on integrating third-party video services into the device, but it didn't deny it either. Instead, it hinted that "premium" services could find their way to the Slingbox.
For me, that will be the missing piece that Slingbox needs. Add the ability to also see stuff from other services into the mix and you might just have the complete set-top box experience. What do you think of the new Slingbox devices?
